About the Amish
The Old Order Amish in Southern Michigan
The Amish in southern Michigan belong to a very traditional Old Order “Swiss Amish” sect — one of the most conservative of all Amish groups. Their black buggies are topless, and they do not have motors or power equipment of any kind. Alas, they are also some of the last Amish to still make furniture by utilizing hand tools and traditional, time honored construction methods. In that respect, the furniture is more like the “back-to-handtools” movement that can be found amongst the “English” in New England and the West Coast.
